As the weather warms and gardens spring back to life, a local master gardener is shedding light on some of the most pressing issues facing green thumbs in the Cancun area. In an exclusive interview with The Cancun Lobby, Marisa Hernández shared her expert advice on properly pruning rosemary, identifying and managing invasive tree species, and the common mistakes to avoid when tending to your outdoor oasis.
Rosemary Rejuvenation: Timing is Everything
Rosemary is a staple herb for many home cooks, but keeping it healthy and productive requires some strategic pruning. According to Martha Stewart's gardening experts, the best time to prune rosemary is in the late spring or early summer, after the plant has finished blooming. "This will spur fresh growth and support new harvests throughout the summer," Hernández explained. "The key is to avoid pruning too early or too late, as that can damage the plant."
Invasive Trees: A Growing Threat
One of the biggest challenges facing Cancun's lush greenery is the spread of invasive tree species. The National Park Service warns that non-native trees can quickly outcompete indigenous flora, disrupting ecosystems and displacing native wildlife. "We're seeing a real uptick in problematic trees like the Brazilian Pepper and the Australian Pine," Hernández said. "Homeowners need to be vigilant about identifying and removing these species before they take over."
Pruning Pitfalls to Avoid
When it comes to pruning, Hernández cautions against a few common mistakes. "The biggest issue is cutting back too aggressively," she said. "You never want to remove more than a third of the plant at a time." Experts at Louisiana State University's agricultural center also recommend using clean, sharp tools and timing pruning to avoid damaging new growth.
With Hernández's expert guidance, Cancun gardeners can tackle this season's challenges and enjoy bountiful, healthy harvests all year round. As she puts it, "A little prevention and know-how goes a long way in maintaining a thriving outdoor oasis."
